Measures to increase surveillance on Rohingyas taken

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that barbed wire fencing, CC cameras and watch towers are being set up to monitor the displaced Rohingya people sheltered in Teknaf. He said this while answering a question to journalists at the Coast Guard’s silver jubilee celebration at the Coast Guard headquarters in Agargaon on Saturday (Feb. 15).

Asked whether due to weak surveillance of the Rohingya trawler capsized in the bay recently, the minister said that the surveillance on the Rohingyas was not weak at all. You know 11 lakh Rohingyas live in Teknaf, which is 3 times of the total population people of Teknaf. Police, RAB, BGB and Ansar are working there sincerely. Prime Minister has instructed to construct barbed wire fencing at Rohingya camps. Meanwhile, the army has begun to build a barbed wire fence.

Our prime aim is not to allow the Rohingya people to leave the camp and mix with our people.In addition, watch towers and CCTVs will be set up to strengthen their surveillance. He said all our forces were ready so that they could not come out.

Asked about negotiations with Myanmar to withdraw the Rohingya, he said talks with Myanmar did not stop, talks are underway. Hopefully one day Myanmar will take back Rohingyas.

Regarding the Coast Guard, the home minister said that the Coastguard is no longer a juggernaut. It has become a powerful force. The force has been working in controlling various offenses including preventing smuggling, illegal fishing and smuggling along sea. The Coast Guard is also working to protect the environment.
