Court issues Summons to fifteen including CEC

Dhaka: In two separate cases filed by the two BNP mayor candidates, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda and fifteen other defendants have been issued summons to respond to the allegations of irregularities and corruption in the recently held Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations elections.

Election Tribunal Judge Utpal Bhattacharjee passed the order on Tuesday (March 3) taking cognizance of the two cases. The judge fixed April 2 as the day for responding. A court source confirmed the matter.

Ishraq Hossain, BNP candidate filed the case on Tuesday (March 3) demanding the cancellation of the recently held election of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) alleging irregularities and corruption.

The Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commission Secretary, Secretary ( Joint Secretary) of DSCC Md. Abul Kasem and the newly elected mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas were made defendants among others.

BNP mayor candidate Tabitha Awal filed a case on Monday (March 2) seeking the cancellation of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election. In the case eight persons including CEC KM Nurul Huda, Returning Officer Abul Kasem and newly elected Mayor Atiqul Islam were made defendants.

On February 1 in DSCC and DNCC election was won respectively by Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas and Atiqul Islam.
