Corona slaps three billion dollar loss to garments sector

As the time passes on, the number of deadly coronavirus infected persons in the country is increasing. As a result the damages to the transport, tourism and export sectors are increasing. The export oriented garments industry has suffered most.

Garments owners organization BGMEA has said that since the deadly coronavirus was detected in Bangladesh, the country's textile sector has cancelled and suspended 922.36 million pieces orders. The market value of these products is 2.90 billion US dollar.

BGMEA President Dr Rubana Haque confirmed the matter on Tuesday (March 31) to barta24.com.

She said that until 6 pm today United States, Germany Italy and few other countries have cancelled orders of 920.36 pieces of 1059 factories. The loss amounted to 2.90 billion US dollars. There are 210000 workers in these factories.

It is again in the BGMEA's list of 4,200 factories. The real picture of the loss is even greater.

In addition, in the last 14 months (from January 2019 to February 2020), 106 BGMEA listed factories have been closed due to financial crisis.

The export of garments done on March 18 this year has decreased by 41.84 percent compared to the previous year. This year till March 18, it decline by 12.2 percent. Exports declined by 44.15 percent on March 20 this year compared to the previous year.

Most export-oriented factories including BGMEA, BKMEA and BTMEA are closed until Saturday (April 4). The industry is incurring losses amounting to Taka thousands of crores.
