Considering the gradual deterioration of coronavirus situation, the Dhaka University (DU) authorities have decided to start online classes from the first week of July.
The decision was taken in a virtual meeting chaired by the University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman on last Thursday (June 25). Deans, departmental heads and heads of institutes of different faculties joined the meeting.
This information was disclosed in a press release sent from the public relations department of the University on Friday (June 26).
Earlier, the authorities could not decide on the online class considering the various problems of the students. However, several departments started this activity on their own initiative. In this matter if the students have no internet connection and technical problems due to financial difficulties, the authorities will help them.
According to the press release, many departments or institutes have involved students in various educational activities, including taking classes online, in spite of various limitations and obstacles, as decided earlier in the meeting of the Dean's Committee on the emergence of coronavirus. All the departments or institutes which could not start online classes due to various reasons have been requested to start online academic activities within the first week of July with limited capacity.
A committee has also been formed headed by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof. Dr. ASM Maqsood Kamal to formulate policies centrally for conducting online academic activities, report on ancillary issues including construction of information technology infrastructure and financial involvement.
It also said that necessary facilities should be provided so that no student is out of education due to financial difficulties. Earlier on Thursday, in a meeting of online Vice-Chancellors of the Universities with UGC, all public Universities in the country agreed to take online classes on the condition of providing free internet package to students during the pandemic.
