Kurigram: The water level of 16 rivers including Brahmaputra, Dharla, Teesta, Dudhkumar and Phulkumar has been rising in Kurigram for the last one week. This has severely worsened the overall flood situation in Kurigram district.
In Kurigram, the water of Brahmaputra is flowing 33 cm above the danger level and the water of Dharla is flowing 37 cm above the danger level. As a result, at least hundreds of low-lying areas in the Brahmaputra and Dharla basins have been inundated.
On Saturday (June 27), various areas, including the Dharla and Brahmaputra basins, began to flood anew.
People of 7 to 8 villages including North Balarhat, Adarsh village and Vyanerchar of Narayanpur union in the Brahmaputra river basin of Nageshwari upazila have become marooned. In addition, about 200 houses have been submerged.
Narayanpur Union (UP) Chairman Mojibur Rahman confirmed the information.
Several chars including Bala Doba, Uttar Bala Doba and Masaler Char in Begumganj Union of Ulipur Upazila have been submerged again. Begumganj Union (UP) chairman Belal Hossain confirmed the information.
"Nearly 2,000 houses have been flooded in my union," he said. At present they are living in different high places including boats and tongs.
Kurigram Water Development Board (WDB) Executive Engineer Ariful Islam said that the water of Dharla at the bridge point is flowing over 36 cm of danger level. In the last 24 hours, the catchment water has increased by 16 cm. The water of Brahmaputra is flowing 33 cm above the danger level at Chilmari point and 18 cm Nunkhawa point. On the other hand, the Teesta water continues to rise.
