The Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers continue to rise due to heavy rains and upstream rushing water. The flood situation has deteriorated in Islampur, Dewanganj, Bakshiganj and Melandah upazillas of Jamalpur district.
About 70,000 people of 15,224 families in 53 villages of 13 unions of four upazillas have been marooned till 8 pm on Sunday (June 28). District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md. Nayeb Ali confirmed the matter.
Abdul Mannan, water gauge reader of Jamalpur Water Development Board (WDB), said the water level of Jamuna river was rising at Bahadurabad Ghat Point till 8 pm on Sunday and was flowing 8 cm above the danger level.
According to local sources, the flood waters have been rising for the last four days. Meanwhile, due to the rapid increase in flood waters, it has inundated crop lands, houses, roads and educational institutions in the lower reaches of the river and new areas are being flooded.
Joynal Abedin, chairman of Sapdhari Union Parishad of Islampur Upazila, said, excess flood waters have entered the new char areas of Sapdhari Union in the month of Ashar. The floodwaters have inundated 3,000 houses in Prajapatichar, Charshishua, Charanandanerpara, Amtali and Kasharidoba.
Chinaduli UP chairman Abdus Salam said, roads in the low-lying areas have been closed due to the floods earlier this year and there has been a shortage of pure drinking water and cattle fodder in the flood-hit areas of the Jamuna chars. Most of the low-lying areas have been submerged and about 8,000 people from 4,000 families have been marooned.
Jamalpur District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md. Naib Ali said, meanwhile, 20 metric tonnes of GR rice has been distributed in the flood-hit areas of Islampur and Dewanganj and 350 metric tonnes of GR rice, Taka 6 lakh in cash and 2,000 packets of dry food have been sent to the disaster management directorate as demand.
Jamalpur Water Development Board (WDB) Executive Engineer Md. Abu Saeed said, the water level in the Jamuna is rising rapidly. At the same time, the water of other rivers including Brahmaputra is also increasing.
