Former law maker ATM Alamgir dies from corona

Former Lawmaker and valiant freedom fighter ATM Alamgir of Cumilla-9 (Laksam-Manoharganj) constituency has died of coronavirus. He was 60.

He passed away at Green Life Hospital in Dhaka on Monday (August 3) at around 8:30 pm (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He had been undergoing treatment in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) unit of the hospital for the last few days due to corona.

Former vice chairman of Manoharganj Upazila Parishad Kamal Hossain Bhulu, younger brother of ATM Alamgir, confirmed the death at around 10pm.

He said he would be buried at the family graveyard in Jhalom village of Manoharganj upazilla after Janaza at 10 am on Tuesday (August 4). He said the Al Rashid Foundation in Dhaka would complete his burial.

According to family sources, the valiant freedom fighter ATM Alamgir was elected as a BNP MP from the former Cumilla-10 (Laksam) and the present Comilla-9 (Laksam-Manoharganj) constituency in the 5th and 6th Jatiyo Sangsad elections. Supreme Court lawyer ATM Alamgir was former chairman of the Industrial and Commerce Bank. However, before the last election (2018), he joined the Jatiya Party of late Hussain Muhammad Ershad. He then contested from Comilla-9 (Laksam-Manoharganj) constituency in the last JS election with the symbol Plough.

ATM Alamgir played an admirable and pioneering role in the great liberation war of 1971. His death has brought a pall of grief in the political and social arena of Cumilla.
