BNP leader Major Hafiz walked out from jail

BNP Vice Chairman and former Minister Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram has been released from prison. He was released from Keraniganj Central Jail on Sunday (March 20) at 7 pm. Party leaders welcomed him at the jail gate.

BNP media cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan confirmed the matter.

Earlier on Sunday morning, Major Hafiz was granted bail in the judicial court in the Gulshan police station sabotage case.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury ordered Hafiz Uddin to be sent to jail after surrendering and applying for bail in this case on Tuesday.

On December 14, Major Hafiz left the capital's Shahjalal Airport on an Air India flight around 2.30 pm for knee surgery. On December 28, the court sentenced him to 21 months in prison while undergoing treatment in India.

Besides, he was sentenced to another one month's imprisonment in default to pay a fine of Tk. Five thousand. Later on March 3, he returned home after receiving treatment in India.

According to the complaint in the case, on June 4, 2011, at Mohakhali under Gulshan Thana he obstructed the police from illegal assembly on the road in front of the wireless gate water tank and attacked them. They vandalized and set fire to cars moving on the road.

On April 29, 2014, after investigating the case, Gulshan police SI Kamrul Hasan Talukdar filed a charge sheet in the court. On April 25, 2022, the court framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin.

During the trial of the case, the court accepted the testimony of 7 out of 12 witnesses. After presenting arguments on December 24, the court fixed December 28 as the day to announce the verdict.
