Dhaka: A dramatic turn has taken place that saved Jatiyo party(JP) from another split. The feuding groups have reached an understanding allowing some concessions to each other. According to understanding GM Quader will remain chairman while estranged wife of late H.M. Ershad will retain her post of the leader of the opposition in the Jatiyo Sangsad. Again in the upcoming Rangpur-3 by–election Rahgir Al Mahi Saad Ershad is contesting as JP nominated candidate.
JP presidium member SM Faisal Chisty has confirmed this bi-lateral understanding to barta24. On Saturday (Sept.8) night such understanding was reached at a close door meeting held at Baridhara Cosmopolitan Club which lasted from 9 P.M to 12 P.M.
The 2.and half hour long meeting was attended by pro-Rowshan group was represented Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmood, Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Fakhrul Imam, Selim Osman and SM Faisal Chisty. While the pro- Quader group was represented by Kazi Feroz Rashid, Syed Abu Hossain Babla, Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu and General Masududdin Chowdhury. JP Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga also took part in the meeting.
It is learnt that the feud originated after a letter was sent to the Speaker of Jatiyo Sangsad from the party to make party chairman GM Quader as the leader of the opposition. To this Rowshan Ershad and her followers showed strong reaction. Rowshan also sent another letter to the Speaker to ignore the letter of Quader. She also demanded the post of leader of the opposition.
On Sept.5 the pro- Rowshan group in a prèss conference announced that Rowshan Ershad has been made chairman of JP. Simultaneously it was announced that the party council will be held within 6 months and called upon GM Quader to play the role of co-chairman. The estranged group also formed a separate parliamentary board to nominate one candidate for Rangpur by -poll.
To this reaction of Rowshan Ershad, as counter reaction GM Quader held a press conference. On September 6 in a joint meeting of presidium and parliamentary body decided to expel some presidium members. He also finalized the JP candidate for Rangpur by-poll.
Many thought that the JP is going to have another split. But in the meeting of Saturday night it took a dramatic turn. Though nothing was announced jointly but there was a signal for patch up. Though the feuding groups disclosed same information about the leader of the opposition but about the candidature of Rangpur by-poll the difference is still remaining. Pro-Rowshan group claims as Saad’s candidature but the pro-Quader group said that nothing is finalized yet.
On Sunday (Sept.8) at 11 A.M an emergency press conference was convened at party’s Banani office. It is learnt that Secretary General of JP Mashiur Rahman Ranga will brief the journalists about the on going crisis within the party.
