According to the Supreme Court verdict despite the petition to deposit Taka 1,000 crore and remove the restrictions along with a copy of that judgment, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) ‘s embargo was not being lifted from the Grameenphone(GP).

Finally, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has changed its position slightly.

At a commission meeting held in last week, BTRC decided to grant a 30 percent discount on Grameenphone's equipment imports.

On February 23, Grameenphone paid Tk 1,000 crore as a pay order to BTRC. They are expected to pay another one thousand crore by May 31.

BTRC wanted Grameenphone not to approve anything before May 31. But as the Grameenphone presented the court ruling, they moved away from their previous position.

Meanwhile, all maintenance of Grameenphone network has been stopped for the past eight months due to the BTRC ban. As a result, the quality of their customer service is getting worse day by day. They repeatedly raised the matter before the BTRC, but it did not work.

In last July with the approval of the government the BTRC banned all sorts of Grameenphone and Robi approvals.

By law, operators also have to get prior approval from the BTRC for the launching of new packages, network broadcasts and maintenance.

BTRC went to such tough position as the commission claimed dues of Taka 12 thousand 589 crore 95 lakh to GP and to Robi Taka 867 crore.
