The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) will announce the new price of LP gas on Sunday (October 10).

BERC sources said that the new tariff is going to be announced in the context of the public hearing on the application of the importers.

On April 12, the BERC announced the price of LP gas for the first time. It was then said that the bid announced by the Saudi state-owned company Aramco was based on a monthly price. “If the price of Saudi fluctuates, the price of LPG will fluctuate,” it said.

The other commission and expenses of the importer will remain unchanged.

The commission has been announcing the rates every month as per those instructions. In reality, the rates announced by the BERC have been seen to be effective in very few cases.

Until April 12, the price of LPG was at the discretion of the companies. Though there has been talk for a long time about setting the price, there was tension over whether the energy department, BERC or BPC would fix it.

In the wake of the latest CAB writ petition, the High Court show-caused the BERC for not fixing the price of LPG.

In this regard, the bid was announced on April 12 with a public hearing on January 14.

The importers raised objections on the day the price was announced. They claimed that the price should have raised. From then on, LOAB started a tug of war with BERC.

They also rejected the decision to announce monthly rates and they created pressure on BERC in various ways.

LOAB president Azam J Chowdhury even threatened to stop LPG imports.

The use of LPG is increasing rapidly in the country. A total of 44,974 metric tons of LPG was used in the financial year 2008-2009. In a few years, it has increased to 12 lakh tons.
