Lockdown extended to May 16

The government has extended ongoing lockdown till May 16 in a bid to contain coronavirus transmission in the country.

Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam made the information while briefing reporters after Cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Monday.

He said owners couldn't give eid leave to workers not more than three days. Public transport can operate within cities from May 6.

However, inter-district bus service and launch and train services will also remain suspended till May 16, he added.

Khandaker Anwarul Islam said the shopping malls that fail to comply with health guidelines would be shut if necessary.

The government enforced the ongoing strict lockdown from April 14 to contain the spread of the deadly virus. On April 20, the lockdown was extended for another one week. Later, the lockdown, which is scheduled to end on April 28, will now continue till May 5.
