His poetry has inspired the people of this country. Some of his poems are in the mouths of people, taking the first row in the recitation of the students. Today is the 93rd birthday of Shamsur Rahman, the pioneer of post-modern Bengali poetry. He was born on October 23, 1929 in Mahuttuli, Dhaka.
The image of that time has repeatedly appeared in his poems for being born in subjugated Bengal. He brought a tide in prose poetry. He used to write about civic life with extraordinary skill. He was a secular and free-spirited man. Many times the fundamentalists have threatened to kill him. But he was as immortal as his writing.
Shamsur Rahman passed Matriculation Examination from Pogoj School in Old Dhaka in 1945. He passed IA from Dhaka Intermediate College in 1947. He was admitted to Dhaka University in English and also took regular classes there for three years. In the end, he did not give the final examination. After passing BA in the (pass course), he secured second place in the second class of the MA (Preliminary) examination in English literature but did not appear in the final examination.
Shamsur Rahman, one of the leading poets of Bengali literature, published his first book of poetry, ‘Prothom Gaan ditio mirtur agey’. After the publication of the first book of poetry, he became popular among the readers. His poem 'Asader Shirt' illustrates the mass uprising of 1971.
When the war of liberation started in 1971, Shamsur Rahman and his family moved to their ancestral home in Paratali village of Narsingdi. In early April, he wrote several poems, including "Swadhinata Tumi" and "Tomakey power jannay, hey swadhinata”. Shamsur Rahman has published more than sixty books of poetry. He has also published children's books, translations, short stories, novels, autobiographies and essays.
Poet Shamsur Rahman started his career as a journalist in 1957 in the Daily Morning News. In February 1977, he was appointed editor of the Dainik Bangla and the weekly Bichitra. He was forced to resign in 1987 during military rule. He then became the editor of a monthly literary magazine called Adhuna.
He has received Ekushey Padak, Swadhinata Padak, Bangla Academy Award, Adamji Sahitya Puraskar, Nasir Uddin Gold Padak, Jibanananda Puraskar, Abul Mansur Ahmed Smriti Puraskar, Mitsubishi Puraskar (for journalism) and Ananda Puraskar for writing. The University of Jadavpur in India and Rabindranath Tagore University awarded the poet the honorary D.Litt.
He breathed his last at 6:35 pm on Thursday, August 17, 2006 while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka. He was buried at Banani graveyard in Dhaka, next to his mother's grave.
