Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Awami League mayoral candidate in the election Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy said Narayanganj has seen a lot of development in the last five years. You must maintain its continuity. I toured every ward. The soil and the people said boat only boat. I will request the people of Narayanganj to give me a chance for another five years. Many things can happen at any time. I am willing to accept death for you. I did not look at the world. I hope you will not give return me empty handed.

She made the remarks at a road rally on behalf of the ‘boat’ at Railgate No. 2 in Narayanganj on Friday (January 14) afternoon.

Ivy said, this is the base of Narayanganj Awami League, the base of the people. Awami League was born at Paikpara Mutual Club in Narayanganj. But this city was polluted. That's why the leader gave me the ‘boat’.

"My father was an Awami League activist," she said. He had worked for the welfare of the people. He was the leader of the land and the people. He taught me that Allah exists among human beings. Allah is found only by serving people. I have worked for you for a long time.

Ivy said the leader nominated me when there was no one in town. I was elected in 2011. You defeated my opponent by a margin of one lakh votes. You did the same thing in 2016. This boat is Ivy's boat, Victory’s boat, Bangabandhu's boat. No one has the power to stop this boat.

"I am grateful to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the president of the Awami League," she said. She handed the boat over to me. I am also grateful to the leaders of Awami League for standing by me against terrorism. My leaders have understood the minds of the people of Narayanganj, they know what the people say.

Bangladesh has strongly condemned the drone strikes by Huthi militias in the United Arab Emirates. The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in Musaffah, causing extensive damage to civilian property.

The foreign ministry said in a statement that the latest attack was "an intense form of aggression by Huthi militias that has escalated tensions in the region."

This is a repeat of the terrorist attack after the hijacking of the UAE-flagged cargo ship Rawabi off the coast of Al Hudayah Governorate on January 2.

The statement said that Bangladesh considers the recent drone strikes targeting civilian installations and killing of innocent civilians an illegal, cowardly act of terrorism and a clear violation of international law and civil code.

Noting that such irresponsible actions could escalate tensions in the region, Bangladesh has called on Huthi militias to refrain from repeating such illegal activities and deliberately escalating tensions.

Dhaka expresses its strong solidarity against any threat to the security and safety of the people of the United Arab Emirates and its brotherly people.

The statement further said that Bangladesh is firmly committed to all efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.

President Abdul Hamid addressing the Deputy Commissioners said that we  have to remember that our family lives on people's money. So people have the right to receive services. He said that serving the people is not a matter of kindness or generosity.

The president made the remarks while addressing a video conference from Bangabhaban at the Deputy Commissioners' Conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday (January 18).

"You are acting as the coordinator and supervisor of various government activities at the field level, which is playing an important role in the development of the country as a whole," he said.

The President, as a servant of the people, advised to put the interests of the country and the people above all, and said, "We and you are the servants of the people." So do your duty as a servant of the people. Deliver government services to the doorsteps of the people.

He said social security programs are an effective means of alleviating poverty and establishing social justice. Through these programs, DCs need to provide effective leadership in meeting the basic needs of the country's poor, ensuring social security and empowerment of the people, especially women.

The President directed the Divisional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners to build a culture of transparency and accountability at every level of field administration.

President Hamid said corruption is the biggest obstacle to development. Sustainable development is being hampered by corruption. Therefore, a culture of transparency and accountability must be built at every level of field administration.

Noting that responsibilities and powers are vested in every level of bureaucracy and political leadership, the President said that exercise of power is essential for proper and efficient discharge of responsibilities, but it is more important to ensure that power is not misused.

He said the DCs need to provide effective leadership in ensuring that the basic needs of the poor, social security and empowerment of the people, especially women, are met through these programs.

The President said that the Deputy Commissioners should make efforts so that the real poor could enjoy the benefits of this program.

He said the government has given special importance to eco-friendly rural development, which is different from previous years. In villages like cities, all kinds of facilities have to be ensured. In order to ensure civic amenities in Mofussil areas, President DCs should take special initiative to develop Upazila Sadar and growing industrial centers as modern cities and suburbs through housing, education, expansion of agro-based industries, medical services, electricity, gas, drinking water and sewerage system.
