Flooding occurred in most areas of Sylhet city in the early morning of Eid day due to heavy rain from midnight on Sunday (June 16). As a result, many important and main roads are submerged in water. In this situation, most of the Eid-ul-Azha congregations were canceled and the worshipers offered prayers in the local mosques. There is also less presence of worshipers.

The main Eid congregation in Sylhet is held at the Shahi Eidgah Maidan. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation, held the Eid congregation with the rain-soaked people there. Every year 1 to 1.5 lakh worshipers gather at this Eidgah, but this time only a few thousand worshipers were present due to rain.

Meanwhile, heavy rains led to inundation of homes and businesses. As a result, the sacrificers of Sylhet city are in a lot of trouble. Many people keep the animals on the second floor of the house. If the water does not come down, you cannot offer the sacrifice. Some people keep their sacrificial animals from one house to another. They say that if the water does not subside after a day or two, the sacrifice will have to be made.

On the surface, various areas of Sylhet city can be seen, most of the low-lying areas are submerged in water. Especially in Shahjalal suburb all area under water. Many people have waist-deep water in their basements. Laladighirpar, Sobhanighat, Kalighat, waterlogging has occurred in most areas. Also several places of various roads including Airport Road, South Surma Bangbir Road have been submerged. In some places waist-deep water was seen.

According to Sylhet Meteorological Office sources, Sylhet received 173.6 mm of rain in the last 24 hours (from 6 am on Sunday to 6 am on Monday). And on Monday, 86 millimeters of rain fell from 6 am to 9 am. It's still raining.

According to Sylhet Water Development Board (WDB) sources, the water of three rivers in Sylhet is flowing above danger level at three points till 12 noon on the day of Eid. Surma water is flowing 79 cm above the boundary line at Kanaighat point, Kushiara water is 67 cm above the boundary line at Fenchuganj point and Sari River water is flowing 15 cm above the boundary line at Sarighat point. Besides, the water in all the rivers of Sylhet continues to rise.

According to the information of the district administration, flood occurred in 9 out of 13 upazilas of Sylhet till 11 pm on Sunday. 1 lakh 42 thousand 185 people were affected by flood in the entire district. Goainghat upazila has been flooded the most. 1 lakh 14 thousand 600 people of 13 unions of this upazila. The district administration has opened a total of 537 shelters in 13 upazilas of the district. 68 people have taken shelter. Among them, 43 people have taken shelter in Osmani Nagar, 10 people in Balaganj and 15 people in Biyanibazar.

Sylhet City Corporation Chief Engineer Noor Azizur Rahman did not receive a call on his mobile phone to inquire about water logging in the city.

However, Chief Executive Officer of Sylhet City Corporation Md. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury told Barta24.com that Meghalaya is raining heavily and Sylhet is also raining as a result of which the water in Surma River is increasing. Due to the rise in the river water, the cisterns overflowed and water entered the low-lying areas of the city causing flooding. These waters will go down when the rain stops.

He also said that everyone's cooperation is needed to eliminate water logging. Our people clean the drains every day. But many people throw the garbage in the drain without throwing it in the specified place. As a result, proper drainage of water is prevented.

When asked about this, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Sylhet Mohammad Mubarak Hossain told Barta24.com that due to heavy rains and landslides, the water in Sylhet's Surma, Kushiara and Sari rivers has increased. As a result, new water entered some areas in Kanaighat, Goainghat and Jaintapur upazilas. But so far the situation has not arisen to go to the shelter. We are in constant contact with the upazila administration officials.

He said the shelter is open. So far, the Executive Officers of each Upazila have been instructed to take necessary food arrangements for those who have reached the shelter.
