Serial killer Rasu Khan's death sentence upheld

The High Court has upheld the death sentence of Rasu Khan, a serial killer who was once discussed nationwide in the Parveen murder case in Chandpur.

After hearing the death reference and appeal of the case on Tuesday (July 9), the High Court bench comprising of Justice Syed Mohammad Ziaul Karim and Justice KM Qamrul Kyes gave the verdict. Deputy Attorney General Monirul Islam represented the state in the court.

Apart from Rasu Khan, the other two persons sentenced to death are Zahirul and Yunus. However, the High Court reduced the sentence of Zahirul Islam and his accomplice Yunus to life imprisonment, who were sentenced to death in the trial court.

Rasu Khan, sentenced to death, is the son of Mun Khan alias Abu Khan of Madna village in Chandra Union of Chandpur Sadar Upazila. While Zahirul son of Md. Mostofa of Gobindpur village of Faridganj upazila and Yunus son of late Misir Ali of the same village.

After his arrest on October 7, 2009 in the case of theft, the police interrogated him on suspicion of involvement in the murder of a local girl based on his mobile phone. Rasu Khan opened his mouth on remand where all the incidents of rape and murder came out. After the remand, the 11 murders of Rasu Khan came up in the statement under section 164 in the court. Rasu Khan's target was to commit 101 murders. All those killed by Rasu Khan were innocent garment workers.

Among the cases filed against Rasu Khan, the first death penalty verdict came on April 22, 2015 in the murder case of garment worker Shahida of Khulna. Chandpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Arunabh Chakraborty pronounced the death sentence on Rasu Khan.

On the night of July 20, 2009, Rasu Khan and the other accused raped and strangled a woman named Parveen Akhter in a secluded field of Madhya Hansa village of Faridganj upazila. In this case, Judge Abdul Mannan of Chandpur Women and Child Torture prevention Court sentenced three people including Rasu Khan and his nephew Zahirul Islam to death on March 6, 2018. Later the death reference of this judgment came up for hearing in the High Court.
