US calls for protecting freedoms of all Bangladeshis to ensure democratic future
The United States has called for protecting and promoting the freedoms of all Bangladeshis to ensure a truly democratic future.
In response to a question at a regular briefing in Washington on Tuesday (November 12), US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said that protecting and promoting these freedoms is essential for all Bangladeshis to ensure a truly democratic future for the country.
We regularly express our support for the interim government of Bangladesh, including all its partners, said Vedant Patel. He said that they support freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and organization for all, including dissent and opposition.
He added that in our view, these freedoms are essential elements of any democracy.
Regarding the cancellation of the journalist's accreditation card, Patel said that he had not seen the report. If the cancellation is true, it is certainly unfortunate, he said that it is their "strong view" that a "free media" is important to cover any situation, including the situation in Bangladesh.
"Press and media freedom are important to the US President and Secretary of State," he said. "We want to encourage and ensure that the rights and freedoms of journalists are properly respected," Patel said.
