Dhaka: As part of the 'Barasat Barricade to North City' demanding an independent university, students of the government Titumir College have blocked the Mohakhali railway line. A train has been stuck at this time.
On Monday (February 3), the protesting students blocked the Mohakhali rail crossing at 3:40 pm. Earlier, they had reached the Mohakhali rail crossing with a procession from in front of the college at 2:45 pm.
Meanwhile, due to the blockade of the railway line, an airport-bound train coming from Kamalapur was seen standing in front of the Mohakhali rail crossing. Earlier, they blocked the road in front of Titumir College with bamboo on the road at 12:30 pm. During this time, they were seen shouting slogans including 'If something happens to my brother, fire will burn in every house', 'Shahbagh or Mohakhali, Mohakhali Mohakhali'. Due to the road blockade, traffic on the Mohakhali-Gulshan road was closed for about two hours. However, ambulances and patient-carrying vehicles were exempted
In addition to the blockade, students are also holding a hunger strike in front of Titumir College for the sixth day.
Earlier, on Sunday (February 2) night, the protesting students announced a Barasat Barricade to North City and a college shutdown program.
Announcing these programs at a press conference in front of the main gate of the college at 11 pm, Titumir Unity Adviser Mahmudul Hasan Muktar said, "We are agitating for the university. But the state is repeatedly cheating us. That is why we are announcing an indefinite shutdown of Titumir College from Monday (February 3) morning. During this period, there will be no classes, exams, or academic and administrative activities. The gates of Titumir will be unlocked only after Titumir College is declared an independent university.
At this time, he also said that the students will completely block the railway at the Mohakhali rail crossing, the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Amtoli intersection, the Mohakhali-Gulshan road and the Gulshan Link Road from 11 am to 10 pm on Monday.
He also warned of a stricter program if the students are not contacted about their demands or their demands are not accepted by Monday night.
At this time, he also raised 3 demands. They are —
Titumir University should be given state recognition and the university academic calendar should be published. The statement of the education adviser should be withdrawn immediately and all higher education institutions in Bangladesh, including Titumir University, should be given their own institutional recognition considering their qualifications, ensuring international quality higher education. The law adviser should be properly investigated for putting pressure on the Ministry of Education in the process of forming the Titumir University Commission and the law adviser should apologize publicly, taking responsibility for disrupting state affairs.
Meanwhile, BGB members were seen in a cautious position in the Mohakhali area. A police water cannon was also seen in Amtali.
