Attack on journalists in Supreme Court premises

At least three media workers were attacked on the Supreme Court premises while performing their professional duties.

The incident took place in front of the extended building of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday (February 5) afternoon. An injured journalist has been admitted to a private hospital. The Law Reporters Forum (LRF), an organization of journalists on law, justice and human rights, has condemned and protested the incident.

It is worth noting that the verdict in the case filed against the shooting and bomb attack on the train carrying then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina in Ishwardi, Pabna, was scheduled for Wednesday. On this occasion, BNP leaders and activists were seen attending the court and court premises. The verdict was announced around 11:30 am.

According to eyewitnesses, media workers were waiting to take statements from lawyers after the verdict was announced. At that time, a young man pushed the journalists and came in front of the dias kept there. During this time, he got into an argument with the journalists. At one point, BNP leaders and activists from Pabna present there attacked the journalists. They punched and kicked the media workers. Several journalists were injured in this.

Javed Akhtar, a senior reporter of ATN News and the training and welfare secretary of the Law Reporters Forum, was injured in the incident. The Law Reporters Forum said in a statement that Javed Akhtar has been admitted to the hospital.

In immediate reaction, the journalists boycotted the briefing and sat on a sit-in program in front of the extended building of the High Court Division at the briefing venue.
