JU teachers demand VC Farzana’s dismissal
The teachers of Jahangirnagar University agitating for resignation of its vice chancellor Farzana Islam have now demanded her dismissal following the attack on protesting teachers and students.
They raised the demand at a ‘solidarity rally’ organised by ‘Jahangirnagar against Corruption’, a platform of teachers and students, in front of Old Administrative Building around 12pm on Wednesday (Nov 6).
Campus sources said Chhatra League activists carried out attacks on teachers and students, who confined the vice chancellor to her residence demanding her resignation, on Tuesday (Nov 5), leaving 35 people injured.
A number of teachers of Jahangirnagar University and Dhaka University expressed solidarity with the agitators by joining the rally.
They include JU’s Anu Muhammad, Kamrul Ahsan, Raihan Rain, Sayeed Ferdous, Tapan Kumar Saha, Mirza Taslim Sultana, Anwarullah Bhuiyan, Abdur Razzaque, Khabir Uddin, Kabirul Bashar and Sharmind Nilormi and Dhaka University’s Tanjim Uddin Khan.
Speaking at the rally, teachers said that through instigating Chhatra League activists to carry out attack on the agitating teachers and students, Farzana Islam has lost her right to continue as vice chancellor and to teach students.
Tapan Kumar Saha, a former proctor of Jahangirnagar University, said, “I’m pained by yesterday’s [Tuesday] incident. It’s unfortunate that the vice chancellor has termed ‘mass upsurge’ the attack on teachers and students.”
He said Farzana Islam should be put on trial after investigation.
Prof Kamrul Ahsan of Philosophy Department said, “She [the vice chancellor] let loose Chhatra League activists on the agitating teachers and students. And she thanked Chhatra League for the attack. Farzana Islam cannot remain in the vice chancellor position after this incident.”
