JU teachers form human barricade to protect students
Teachers of Jahangirnagar University have formed a human barricade to protect the students who are agitating on the campus to press removal of Vice Chancellor Farzana Islam for her alleged involvement in corruption.
The teachers said they would not allow police deployed on the restive campus to go for any action against the students, who were agitating on Thursday (Nov 7) breaching a ban imposed by the authorities.
The students took out a protest procession under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar against Corruption’ around 12pm on Thursday which marched from Administrative Building to the vice chancellor’s residence.
In the procession, the agitators shouted slogans – ‘get out, get out, Farzana get out’, ‘shame to the VC declared persona non grata’, ‘Farzana, when will you leave the university’ and ‘wage movement against Farzana’.
Earlier, the authorities imposed a ban on any sort of rally, procession and gathering and staying of students in offices, residential areas and other places on the campus, in a circular issued on Wednesday night.
The circular said all the classes and exams of the university have been suspended for indefinite period as per a decision taken in an emergency meeting of the syndicate on Nov 5.
All the dormitories of the university and shops on the camps have been shut. The university authorities think no student should stay on the camps during the ban.
The agitators announced their fresh programmes on Wednesday, which including locking the Administrative Building on Thursday morning, brining out protest procession at noon, and holding concert in front of VC’s residence in the evening.
The agitating students said they will continue their movement until Vice Chancellor Farzana Islam is removed.
