President M Abdul Hamid today said with a note of sarcasm that nothing pure is now available in the country except arum. The unscrupulous have become champion in adulterations of food and all kinds of fruits.
Addressing the 5th convocation of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Abdul Hamid, also Chancellor of the university held on Sunday(Dec.1), asked the graduates to play due roles against this food adulteration that causes fatal diseases like cancer.
On the occasion, Abdul Hamid called upon the university teachers to take pragmatic steps so that that the education would be the means of the welfare of the country and mankind. They should not remain busy in other outside activities except to deliver their services to give lessons to the students, he mentioned.
The President asked the graduates that not as the Chancellor but as your guardian I advise you not to run after job and money but you have more responsibilities to the society. You should engage yourselves for the welfare of the mankind with honesty and sincerity.
The President also stressed on concentrating to the invention of befitting and appropriate technologies through which the people can stand on their own feet.
Characterized by sharing of fond memories by the new graduates, the convocation ceremony conferred degrees on 2,586 engineering students.
Director of Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute in the United States Saifur Rahman delivered his speech as the convocation speaker while RUET vice-chancellor Rafiqul Islam Sheikh gave his welcome speech on the occasion.
Among others, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriyar Alam, Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, local MPs and vice-chancellors of different universities were present. Earlier a convocation rally led by the President entered the convocation place.
