There are 1277 daily newspapers in the country
From JS session: Information Minister Dr. Hassan Mahmud said that at present the number of the daily newspapers in the country is 1277.
The minister also disclosed the lists of the dailies in order of their circulation. In the lists as usual, Bangladesh Protidin is at the top of the number of circulation now. The news papers’ circulation is 5,53,300 followed by the daily Prothom Alo which is 5,1,800. Apart from this, the third to seventh places are collectively Janakantha, Kalerkantha, Ittefaq and Amader Shomoy.
On Tuesday (Feb. 4) in the session chaired by Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury the Information minister was giving reply to a written question put by treasury bench member Benazir Ahmed MP.
According to the list placed in the Jatiyo Sangsad by the Information minister 8th, 9th and 10th places are occupied by the Samakal, the sangbad and the Bhorer Kagaj respectively from the circulation point of view.
Among the English daily, on the other hand, the Daily Star (number of circulation is 44,800; second position jointly occupied by with the Financial Express and Daily Sun (41 thousand) and the Dhaka Tribune (40,600) in the third place.
In reply to a question placed by treasury bench member Asim Kumar Ukil MP of the Information minister said that during the current culture-friendly government, various projects and steps have been taken for the development of the cine -film. The government is providing grants for the production of quality and creative films. Several donation aided films have gained international acclamation. In addition to nurturing the local culture, the present government has increased the opportunity of producing films with a government grant to attract the interest of creative filmmakers.
The minister said that if anyone is interested in producing any kind of film based on liberation war, children's films and indigenous culture, the government gives special patronization. With all these steps taken by the government, it is expected that the film of Bangladesh will regain its lost glory.
In reply to a written question of the reserved women seat MP Mosammat Shamima Akhter Khanam, Hasan Mahmud said that the documentary film titled ' From Bangabandhu to People’s leader Sheikh Hasina-struggle, independence and development' was being created on the occasion of ‘Mujib Borsho’ by the Directorate of Film and Publications. Once the documentaries have been completed, arrangements will be made to display them in all the districts, upazilas and educational institutions of the country through the Department of Public Relations.
