Court issues death warrant of Bangabandhu’s killer Majed
A court here on Wednesday (April 8) issued the death warrant for Captain (Retd) Abdul Majed, one of the convicted killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Judge of Dhaka’s District and Session’s Court M. Helal Chowdhury issued the warrant after he was produced before his court from the jail, confirmed by Public Prosecutor Khondoker Abdul Mannan to barta24.com.
The court also showed him arrested in the Bangabandhu murder case.
Majed was arrested from the city’s Mirpur area early Tuesday. A team of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested him around 3:30am.
He was produced before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate AM Zulfiqar Hayat which sent him to jail on the day. At first, the court showed Majed arrested in the case as he had been absconding since the case was filed in 1996.
The judge issued the death warrant and also read it out to Majed, who was present on the dock.
During the hearing, Majed told the court that he was not involved with the murder.
The death sentence will be executed between 21 and 28 days of issuing the death warrant, one of lawyers of Bangabandhu murder case panel Mosharraf Hossain Kajol said.
Dhaka District Public Prosecutor Khandakar Abdul Mannan submitted the petitions after receiving the order sheet from the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Majed's arrest.
After passing the orders, the court sent Majed to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj with the death warrant. Jail authorities will again read out the death warrant to him once it reaches the jail, said Mosharraf Hossain Kajol, one of the prosecutors.
