Super cyclone ‘Amphan’: Mongla and Payra ports hoist danger signal no. 10

Super cyclone 'Amphan', which is located in the northwestern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, has moved north-northeast and is currently located 390 kms off the coast of Bangladesh.

This information was given in the special notification No. 31 of the Meteorological Department on Wednesday (May 20) at 6 am.
The cyclone was located 565 kms southwest of Chittagong seaport, 545 kms southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport, 390 kms south-southwest of Mongla seaport and 410 km southwest of Payra seaport.

Amphan can move further north-northeast and cross the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts of India bordering the Sundarbans from Wednesday afternoon to evening.

Within 75 kilometers of the center of the super cyclone, the wind speed is 200 to 220 kilometers per hour. The sea is very rough near the center of the cyclone.

The lowlands of islands and chars may be inundated by tidal waves 10 to 15 feet higher than normal.

In this situation, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to hoist danger signal number 10.
The coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalokati, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barisal, Laxmipur, Chandpur and their outlying islands and chars will be under danger signal number 10.

On the other hand, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar seaports have been asked to display danger signal number 6. The coastal districts of Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, their outlying islands and chars will be under danger signal number 6.

The coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalokati, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barisal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong and their adjoining islands and chars might experience a higher tidal wave than the normal 10 to 15 feet.

During the cyclone, Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalokati, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barisal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong districts and their remote islands and chars with heavy to very heavy rainfall gusty winds blowing at the speed of  140 to 100 km hour. All fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay and the deep sea have been asked to go to safe shelters immediately.
