Cyclone Amphan kills 10 people across the country
Cyclone 'Amphan' has hit the coast of Bangladesh with great force. Local administration officials said 10 people were killed in the cyclone in the coastal districts of Satkhira, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Bhola, Barguna, Rajshahi and Jessore.
Cyclone Amphan crossed Satkhira at a speed of 151 kmph while it hit Jashore at a speed of 167 km. As a result, many houses and trees have collapsed in different parts of the country.
It is learned that two people died in the cyclone in Patuakhali. Among them, a child named Rashed (6) in Galachipa Upazila and a CPP worker named Shah Alam in Kalapara died. Kalapara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abul Hasnat confirmed the death.
In Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur, a man was killed when a wall collapsed on him due to cyclone Amphan.
Bhola Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kaiser Ahmed said Siddique Fakir was going to Bhola's Char Fashion Upazilla to collect old age allowance. At that time, a tree branch fell on him in South Aicha area. He died after being taken to the Upazilla Health Complex in critical condition.
Besides, a young man named Rafiqul Islam (35) of Hasan Union of Borhanuddin of Bhola died. Bhola Borhanuddin Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Enamul Haque said Rafiqul Islam drowned in the Meghna river at Altu Mia Ghat area on his way to Bhola by trawler from Laxmipur.
Satkhira Deputy Commissioner Mostafa Kamal has confirmed that a woman died in the storm while picking mangoes at Sangeeta intersection in Satkhira town.
A mother and daughter were killed when a tree fell on them in Chandpur village of Jashore’s Chougachha upazila. The deceased were identified as Khayant Begum, 45, wife of late Wazed Ali of Chandpur village in Chougachha and her teenage daughter Rabia Khatun, 13. The matter has been confirmed by the OC of Chaugachha police station.
Besides, Barguna Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Masuma Akhter said a businessman fell ill on his way to the Sadar Upazila shelter around 12pm on Tuesday.
A woman named Monowara Begum (42) died while picking mangoes in cyclone Amphan at Mohanpur in Rajshahi. She was the wife of Ishaq Ali of Baruipara in Haridagachhi village of Kesharhat municipality of the upazila.
Family members rescued him from a mango tree near his house around 3:30 pm on Wednesday (May 21).
Quoting the deceased's husband Ishaq Ali, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sanwar Hossain said Monowara Begum fell asleep at home with her young daughter at night. After a while, when the storm started, Monowara went to pick mangoes without the knowledge of the family members. When the female child woke up and started not finding her mother then the family members came to know it.
