BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir believes that the army will not interfere in the progress of the political process of Bangladesh. He said that people have faith in that the army is the protector of the country. So I don't think they (army) will do anything that goes against the will of the people of the country.

Mirza Fakhrul said this in an interview given to Indian media NDTV on Saturday (August 10).

Regarding attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh, the Secretary General of BNP said that there have been some isolated attacks. They are not systematic attacks. Some people are trying to take advantage of the ongoing situation by carrying out these attacks.

He said, 'When there is a change in our country or any other country, especially in third world countries, some people try to take advantage. Unfortunately, in every revolution in Bangladesh, the leaders of the ruling party—be they Hindus or Muslims—become victims.

Mirza Fakhrul said that BNP is ready to go to the elections at any time. However, he feels that the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus needs more time to hold elections. Mirza Fakhrul said that the entire electoral system has become corrupt. They are not in a position to hold free and fair elections. They (interim government) should also bring reforms in the electoral system.

In response to the question whether BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will participate in the elections, Mirza Fakhrul said, "If she is physically healthy, she will definitely participate in the elections."

Sheikh Hasina's son Sajib Wazed Joy has claimed that his mother did not resign as Prime Minister before leaving the country. In this regard, Mirza Fakhrul said, "The president himself said in front of the leaders of various political parties and the top officers of the army that she (Sheikh Hasina) has resigned." There was no coercion or anything like that. It was a revolution. When lakhs of people started marching towards Sheikh Hasina's residence, her security forces and the armed forces gave her two options. One is to stay and face the angry crowd. Another is to leave the country. And at the last moment she (Sheikh Hasina) decided to leave the country.

Regarding India-Bangladesh relations, Mirza Fakhrul said that if BNP comes to power, the relations between the two countries will be taken further.

Regarding the resignation of Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan, Mirza Fakhrul told NDTV that he (Obaidul Hasan) is known to be close to Sheikh Hasina's government, which has killed many people. He (Obaidul Hasan) had to resign in the face of student protests.
