A drug smuggler named Ayub Noor (50) was killed by rubber bullets fired by the police in Vijaynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria. At this time, 10 members of the police, including the SI, were injured.

The incident took place in Adampur village of Pattan union of the upazila on Thursday (July 20) morning.

The deceased Ayub Noor is the son of Mantu Mia of that area. There are five drug cases against him in various police stations including Vijaynagar police station.

Vijaynagar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Raju Ahmed confirmed the matter and told Barta24.com that almost everyone in the family of Ayub Noor of Adampur village of Vijaynagar upazila is a drug dealer. Among them, there are five cases in the name of Ayub Noor, five in the name of his two sons Arif Noor, and 10 in the name of Tofazzal in the name of assault on the police and drug cases. The court had an arrest warrant against Arif Noor.

A team of police led by SI Saidul Islam of Vijaynagar police station launched an operation to arrest Arif early on Thursday morning. At this time, Noor's family members started shouting that they were dacoits and surrounded the police from all sides. They attacked the police with indigenous weapons and snatched Arif with handcuffs. At one point, the police fired rubber bullets in self-defense. Ayub Noor, Salma Begum and a teenager named Eman were injured. The injured were rescued and sent to Dhaka. Ayub Noor died under treatment after being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

OC also said that the dead body of Ayub Noor is being brought from Dhaka to Brahmanbaria. The injured policemen received treatment. Further legal action in this regard is pending
