Palestinian activists and grassroots organizations called for a global strike on Monday to demand an immediate ceasefire as Israel's aggression continues in Gaza.

This information is known in a report of Al Jazeera on Sunday (December 10).

The strike was called by the National and Islamic Forces, a coalition of the main Palestinian factions, the report said. Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and supporters around the world are called to participate in the strike.

We hope the entire world will join the strike, which comes in the context of a wider international movement involving influential people, a coalition statement said. The movement stands against the open genocide in Gaza, ethnic cleansing and colonial settlements in the West Bank.

The strike also opposes efforts to undermine the just national cause of the Palestinian people, the statement added.

The coalition called on people worldwide to come together to send a message of solidarity to the women, children and elderly victims of Israel's brutal bombardment of Gaza, which has so far killed nearly 18,000 people including 297 deaths in the last 24 hours and injuring 49,500 more in just two months.

In response to the call, Lebanon's LBCI News reported on Sunday that all government offices, primary and secondary schools, as well as public and private higher education institutions will hold a general strike in support of the "global call to Gaza".

A growing number of activists around the world also posted on social media calling on people to join the global strike on Monday.

Muwafaq Sahwil, secretary of the Fatah political party in Ramallah and al-Bireh, said the strike, called by Palestinians, trade union activists and international influencers, was a protest against Friday's rejection of a US veto against a UN Security Council resolution.

This is a message to the US administration that stands against the wishes of our people, he told Al Jazeera. It is also a message from people around the world to their politicians and the international community to stand up for the Palestinian people who have suffered 75 years of occupation.

We hope this strike will help the international community stop the war and respond to the Palestinian desire for self-determination, he said.

The 193-member UN General Assembly is likely to vote on Tuesday on a draft resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, media reports said on Sunday.

In October the General Assembly adopted a resolution - 121 votes in favor, 14 against and 44 abstentions.
