A strong earthquake has struck northwest China. At least 111 people were killed and more than 200 were injured.
The country's state media Xinhua confirmed this information on Tuesday (October 19) morning local time. Earlier, the earthquake struck on Monday night.
Xinhua reported that the earthquake hit the border region of the country's Gansu and Qinghai provinces. Several buildings have collapsed. Rescue operations started soon after the incident. The earthquake was only 6.2 magnitude.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the earthquake struck about 23 miles west-northwest of Linxia Chengguanzhen at a depth of about 6 miles. The provincial capital Lanzhou is about 60 miles from the epicenter.
However, according to the USGS, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.9.
