A senior adviser of Iran's elite unit Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Syria, according to a report by Qatar-based media Al Jazeera.

On Monday (December 25), the adviser named Sayed Razi Mousavi was killed outside the capital Damascus.

According to reports, the deceased Syed Razi Mousavi was in charge of coordinating the military alliance between Syria and Iran.

Iran's state news agency IRNA reported that Brigadier General Razi Mousavi was killed in an attack by Zionist Israel in Zainabiya district on the outskirts of Damascus.

Mousavi's assassination was aired on Iran's state television, with regular news coverage suspended. He is described in the news as one of the IRGC's most experienced advisers in Syria. It is also said that the slain commander Mousavi was close to Qassem Soleimani, the former head of IRGC's Quds Force.

However, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not immediately comment on the airstrike in Damascus that killed a top Iranian military adviser.

Earlier, on January 3, 2020, the United States killed Soleimani in a drone attack in the capital of Iraq, Baghdad. Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis was also killed in that attack. About three years later, another top commander of Iran was killed.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the IRGC expressed condolences to the family of the slain commander, calling him a 'martyr'. The statement said, "Congratulations and condolences to his noble family and the commanders and fighters of the Islamic Resistance Front on the martyrdom of this brave commander." The occupying and barbaric Zionist regime will have to pay the ultimate price for this crime.
