A former student of Dhaka University, who was staying in the United States for higher education, was shot dead. The incident happened at a store in Beaumont, Texas on Friday (December 29).
Sheikh Abir Hossain (34) went to the United States last January. He was a research assistant at Lamar University.
Abir was killed at Chris Food Mart in Texas. There he worked as a store clerk. Two suspects shot him as he fled the store with cigarettes.
According to local TV channel KFDM, police reached the spot and found Abir dead.
Abir's elder brother Zahidul Islam told the media on Saturday evening that a family member living in New York informed him of his brother's death this afternoon.
Beaumont police arrested a 19-year-old suspect hours after the killing, and another suspect remains at large.
Before moving to the US, Abir worked as a researcher at BRAC University. Later he joined Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology as Adjunct Faculty.
He completed his graduation and post graduation from Institute of Social Welfare and Research. Abir's wife also lives in the United States.
