US and UK military have launched joint airstrikes targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen.

On Friday (January 12), the British media BBC reported this information about a US official.

Attacks were reported in Yemen's capital Sana, a Houthi stronghold, and the Red Sea port city of Hudaydah.

The BBC reports that a series of attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea sparked a Western conflict against the Houthis, who are known to be backed by Iran.

A Houthi official confirmed to X that a large-scale attack had been carried out across Yemen.

The news agency AP reported that US and UK troops are targeting the military positions used by the Houthis.

AP reporters in Yemen's capital, Sana, heard four explosions, but saw no sign of the warplanes. Two residents of Hudaydah said they heard five powerful explosions.

Earlier, the US and allied nations warned of "consequences" for the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

According to the International Chamber of Shipping, 20 percent of the world's container ships are now bypassing the Red Sea, instead taking the much longer route to their destinations via the southern tip of the African continent.

The Houthis said on Tuesday they targeted a US ship providing support to Israel. It was the 26th attack by the Houthis in the Red Sea since November 19.

The US military said an Iranian-designed one-way drone, anti-ship cruise missile and anti-ship ballistic missile were launched from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen at around 10:30 pm local time on Tuesday.

USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, a US aircraft carrier deployed in the Red Sea, was destroyed by several F/A-18 fighter jets and 18 drones, two cruise missiles and one ballistic missile fired from four destroyers.

Yemen, the poorest country in the Arab world, has been in a civil war for more than 7 years. This war is mainly between about 56 percent of the country's Sunnis and about 43 percent of the Shiites. However, the main conflicting parties in the ongoing armed struggle for dominance in Yemen are the UN-backed government and the anti-Houthi movement.

The Saudi-led Arab military coalition is mainly conducting military operations against the Houthis. Their goal is to reestablish a UN-backed and internationally recognized government in Yemen. The United Arab Emirates is one of the member countries of this alliance.
