The town of Paletwa in the Rakhine state on the Indo-Bangladesh border is now under the control of Myanmar's insurgent group, the Arakan Army (AA). The captured port city is a major trade route with Bangladesh and India.

The news agency Reuters reported this information with reference to the rebel group.

According to media reports, the rebel Arakan Army (AA) has taken control of the town of Paletwa in Rakhine state in the western part of the country after the Myanmar army broke the ceasefire.

The spokesperson of the group, Khain Thu Kha, said on Sunday (January 14), "We will cooperate with the neighboring countries to ensure stability on the border."

It should be noted that the Myanmar army came to power in February 2021 by overthrowing the then government through a coup. Since then, the insurgency in the country has intensified. Of this, the Arakan Army alone has captured 142 army bases from the army.

Last October last year, three rebel groups in northern Myanmar—the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Arakan Army (AA)—joined the 'Three Brotherhood Alliance' to fight against the junta forces. A cease-fire agreement was reached between these three groups, brokered by China. However, when the army violated it, the anti-independence groups attacked again.
