Despite decline in number of cases, arrests increased

The law and order situation in the country is more controlled than at any other time. According to the report of Bangladesh Police, the overall situation is much better due to the increase in bit policing activities. Police have submitted a report to the parliamentary standing committee on the overall situation. Reviewing that report, it was seen that the number of cases has decreased by 16.7 percent. On the other hand, the rate of arrest of accused has gone up.

Reviewing the working paper presented in the parliamentary standing committee, it was seen that the law and order situation in the country is good enough at present. The matter will be clearer in the comparative analysis of case statistics and crimes of the last one year. In 2019, a total of 2 lakh 25 thousand 684 cases have been registered in the country. In April 2020, the current Director General of Police (Inspector General of Police) Dr. Benazir Ahmed took charge and speeded up the bit policing activities. In some cases, the police took preventive measures before the incident took place. As a result, the number of cases in 2020 has come down to 1 lakh 87 thousand 926. In other words, the number of cases decreased by 37,758 in one year i.e. 16.7 percent. The trend of reducing crime will continue in 2021 as well. Bit policing is emerging day by day as effective enough to prevent major crimes.

The report further states that in the case of docaity cases, in 2019 there were 350 docaity cases across the country and in 2020 it decreased to 302. There were 3,653 murder cases in the country in 2019, while in 2020 the number of murder cases decreased to 3,539. In the case of kidnapping cases, 598 cases were registered in the country in 2019 and in 2020 this number dropped to 696. In other words, compared to the previous year, docaity cases have decreased by 13.7 percent, murder cases by 3 percent and kidnapping cases by 18.7 percent and this trend of reduction has continued in 2021 as well.

Arrests are continuing to bring the perpetrators under the law. The total number of accused arrested in the country in 2020 is 5 lakh 56 thousand 700 people. As of June 2021, the number is 2 lakh 99 thousand 953 people. The rate of arrest of accused in 2021 is going up.

Expressing satisfaction over the police report, the chairman of the standing committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs Md. Shamsul Haque Tuku told Barta24.com that the issue of law and order is relative. This is a global problem. But the law and order situation is more controlled than ever. Militants are controlled in the country, terrorist activities are controlled. Other activities including drug smuggling need to be expedited.

He said that in order to protect the youth, all people should be brought under dope test. Drug use should be reduced. Drugs need to be discouraged. Besides, dope test should be made compulsory in all educational institutions, including political parties.
