Law approved keeping provision of administrator appointment in municipality

The cabinet has approved the draft of the Local Government (Municipality Amendment) Act 2021, keeping the provision of leaving the responsibility of mayor and councilors after the expiration of 5 years tenure if the next poll is not held.

Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam came up with the assertion while talking to reporters the regular cabinet meeting on Monday (October 4) with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

He said the tenure of the mayors of the municipality will end if they complete 5 years.

“If the election is not possible within the stipulated time, the government can appoint an administrator or a person nominated by the government for 6 months,” he said.

Mentionable, earlier, if the tenure of the mayors of the municipality was 5 years, the mayor could perform his duties until the next election.

If this law is passed in the parliament, the mayors of the expired municipalities will no longer be able to perform their duties.
