Outgoing Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder said that the Union Parishad election has shown with its finger in the eye that there is no democracy in that election, the corpse of democracy is lying. Who will take the responsibility of burying this body? This is true even if it is said allegorically .

He said that in the name of elections, a permanent settlement of conflicts at the grassroots level has been made across the country. On the other hand, there is a question as to whether it is possible to hold an election without contest or not.

He made the remarks at a press briefing at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on Monday (February 14).

Mahbub Talukder feels that the electoral system needs to be reformed for free, fair and credible elections. He also said that changes in the constitution and rules may be required for this.

Responding to a question from reporters, the outgoing commissioner said that a journalist wanted to know his views on human rights. It is absurd to talk about human rights in Bangladesh. No human rights, no human dignity. Without democracy, these things do not exist. To be a respectable state in the world, the conditions of democracy must be fulfilled.

He further added that human rights will remain the same when there is democracy in the country because it originated from the desire for democracy. At present, development is being given priority. Lawmakers are more interested in development than legislation. But development is never an alternative to democracy.
