Legendary Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury passes away

Founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra and valiant freedom fighter. Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raziun).

He breathed his last on Tuesday (April 11) at 11 pm while undergoing treatment at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in Dhanmondi of the capital. Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury was 81 years old.

He was suffering from kidney complications for a long time. He also had problems related to old age. He was admitted to Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital on April 5. As his physical condition did not improve, a medical board was formed for his treatment last Sunday. Zafrullah Chowdhury was being treated on life support.

Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital chief kidney specialist and Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury's chief physician Professor Mamun Mostafi officially announced the news of Zafrullah Chowdhury's death at 11:35 PM. After hearing the news of Zafrullah Chowdhury's death, representatives of various political parties and socio-cultural organizations rushed to the hospital at midnight. His well-wishers also thronged the hospital.

Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury was on the front line in those tumultuous days of 1971. He was then studying FRCS in the UK. When the war of liberation began, he did not delay a moment in making a decision. He was one of those who burned their Pakistani passports and became stateless. Then he came to India with a special travel permit and moved to Vathanganj in Tripura. After arriving, he opened the Bangladesh Field Hospital within the range of Pakistani artillery fire, which was later shifted to Melaghar.

During the liberation war, thousands of war wounded freedom fighters of Sector RK Force No. 2 were treated in this hospital. After the independence, he returned to the country and did not return to England again. He took his field hospital to the remote areas of Savar. After setting up the tent, the field hospital started again. Worked on social health protection that had not yet been developed in this country Dr. Zafrullah's hand in social health management began to flourish. Public health hospitals continue to grow. He went to produce medicine in the country.

Focused on public health education at that time, his Public Health magazine was popular throughout the country and his edited two-volume 'Jekhhene Doctor Nei' went hand in hand across the country. The chief architect of the health policy of 1982, the country's pharmaceutical industry was revived by his hands, imports were limited. As a doctor, he worked for the health of the people, and was disappointed by the doctors of his profession.

Brave freedom fighter Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury was a freedom fighter throughout his life. The country and its common people never deviated from his focus.
