New president Md. Sahabuddin will take oath on April 24

The newly elected president Md. Sahabuddin will take oath on April 24. At 11 o'clock on that day the 22nd President of the country will be read the oath by JS Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury.

Two-time president Abdul Hamid will be succeeded by Md. Sahabuddin. On February 12, the Awami League candidate Md. Shahabuddin was elected unopposed in the presidential election.

On Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain met the Speaker at his office in Sangsad Bhavan. He informed the Speaker about the date and time of the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected President, a notification from the Parliament Secretariat said.

Abdul Hamid was sworn in for the second term as President on April 24, 2018. The five-year tenure of President Abdul Hamid's second term will end on April 23. The next day Md. Sahabuddin will take oath as the new president at Bangabhaban. The Cabinet Division will organize the swearing-in ceremony.

Biography of Sahabuddin at a glance:

Md. Sahabuddin was born to father Sharfuddin Ansari and mother Khairunnessa in 1949 in Jubilee Tankpara (Shivarampur) of Pabna town. He studied up to Class III at the erstwhile Gandhi Girls' School in Pabna and was admitted to Radhanagar Majumdar Academy in Class IV.

After passing SSC in 1966, he passed HSC in 1968 and BSc in 1971 (conducted in 1972) from Pabna Edward College. Later he obtained his Masters in Psychology from Rajshahi University in 1974 and LLB from Pabna Shahid Advocate Aminuddin Law College in 1975.

Sahabuddin joined the legal profession as a member of Pabna District Bar Association and was engaged in this profession till 1982. Later he joined BCS (Judicial) cadre in 1982.

He retired as a District and Sessions Judge in 2006 after 25 years of service as a Judge. From 2011 to 2016 Sahabuddin served as a Commissioner of Anti-Corruption Commission.

Md. Sahabuddin was elected Secretary General of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Judicial Service Association twice consecutively in 1995 and 1996. He also did journalism early in his professional life. He is a life member of Pabna Press Club and Annada Govinda Public Library.

In 2009 when the Awami League government came to power, a commission was formed to investigate incidents looting, arson and rape that happened indiscriminately after BNP-Jamaat led coalition had come to power in 2001. The head of the commission was Md. Sahabuddin. Md. Sahabuddin, who is known as one of the stalwarts of Awami League, is also the president of Pabna Development Foundation.

Active worker and president of Pabna District Chhatra League during his student life Md. Sahabuddin was an active participant in the liberation war. When Bangabandhu's family was killed in 1975, Md. Sahabuddin was arrested under martial law and was subjected to inhuman torture. After being released from prison, he served as the publicity secretary of Pabna District Awami League.

Md. Sahabuddin, who played one of the key roles in investigating the World Bank's alleged Padma bridge corruption allegations during his tenure as ACC commissioner, was able to prove the allegations to be false and baseless. The inquiry report submitted by him was supported by the Canadian Court.

On November 16, 1972, Md. Shahabuddin got married to Rebecca Sultana, the eldest daughter of Ali Akhtar of Dilalpur, Pabna. Rebecca Sultana joined the BCS administration cadre and retired in 2009 as Joint Secretary. Their only son Arshad Adnan (Ronnie) is currently working in a senior position in Prime Bank with higher degrees at home and abroad.
