Gas has been discovered in a new well in Bhola. Elisha well has gas in 3 layers. A level (3432-3435) test has been completed, and it is possible to produce up to 14 million per day, Bapex Managing Director Mohammad Ali told Barta24.com.

He further informed that two more levels of examination will be completed by the middle of May. Production will start from the level where the most is available. Hope it will be possible to produce well.

Gas was discovered in the Bhola North-2 development well last January. The well is dug to a depth of 3,400'28 meters. BAPEX envisages getting 20 million cubic feet of gas at the time of completion of DST.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid thanked the state owned organization BAPEX and said that the gas exploration program should be carried out as per the plan. Petrobangla plans to drill 46 exploration, development and workover wells during the period 2022-25. The state minister said that the government is working earnestly to ensure energy security by ordering further expansion of offshore and onshore gas exploration and extraction activities. Along with increasing domestic energy exploration activities, long-term and short-term contracts with gas and oil producing countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Brunei are also continuing.

So far the highest gas reserves of Bangladesh have been found in Sylhet region. Bhola is believed to have the largest gas reserves after the Sylhet region. Gas is found wherever wells are being drilled. It is believed that this layer of gas extends over an area of about 2,000 square kilometers up to the ocean and isolated islands. Even if the extracted gas is lying there, it cannot be brought to the mainland due to the lack of pipelines. Attempts are being made to bring gas in the form of CNG from there.

Those concerned think that Bangladesh's oil and gas exploration is still in the darkness. Discovery of 1 gas field by drilling 10 wells is considered an international standard. There, 1 gas field has been discovered by digging three wells in Bangladesh.

The first well was drilled in the border of Bangladesh in 1910. Till date (in 110 years) 28 gas fields have been discovered by drilling 96 wells. Energy experts believe that if the continuation of research activities was properly maintained, we would not have to face this situation today.
