Ekushey Medalist Poet Mohammad Rafiq passed Away (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raziun)

He died on the way back to Dhaka from Barisal on Sunday (August 6) night. He was 80 years old.

This information was confirmed by Mohammad Rafiq's brother Mohammad Tarek.

Mohammad Rafiq was born on October 23,1943 in Bagerhat. The 2010 Ekushey Medalist was an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Jahangirnagar University.

Modern poet Mohammad Rafiq passed secondary school from Khulna Zilla School in 1958. Later he was admitted to Notre Dame College in Dhaka. After passing Higher Secondary in 1961, he was admitted to Rajshahi Government College in the Department of English and completed his graduation.

He made his debut in the 1960s as a modern poet. He became famous for providing poetic material to the student movement and poetry during the Pakistan period and to the anti-dictatorship movement in the eighties in independent Bangladesh.

In 1970, his first poetry book 'Baishakhi Purnima' was published. In 1976, his second poetry book 'Dhular Sansare Ei Mati' was published.
