International human rights organization Amnesty International has welcomed Bangladesh for repealing the Digital Security Act.

The Cabinet meeting on Monday (August 7) decided to amend the Digital Security Act and make a new law called the 'Cyber Security Act'.

Following this announcement, Amnesty International's regional office for South Asia responded in a tweet. It said the Bangladesh government must ensure that the Cyber Security Act, which is planned to replace the Digital Security Act, does not bring back the repressive features of the Act.

The UK-based organization also said that all stakeholders should be given ample opportunity to scrutinize the proposed law and provide feedback on it before the new law is passed. The organization called for its provisions to be fully consistent with international human rights law.

The organization called on the Bangladesh authorities to immediately unconditionally release those detained under the Digital Security Act for exercising their right to freedom of expression and to drop all charges against them.
