In Kushtia's Kumarkhali, a seventh grade student named Ziniya Khatun (14) committed suicide by hanging herself.
On Monday (July 7), an assistant teacher recorded a video of some students smoking on the roof of Sultanpur Mahtabiya Secondary School in Kaya Union of Upazila. Jinia Khatun (14), a seventh grade student and daughter of Zillur Rahman of Sultanpur village, hanged herself with a noose after returning home after threatening to spread the video to her parents.
After this incident on Tuesday (July 8) afternoon, when he came to the funeral, the headmaster of the school, Abdur Rashid, was mobbed by the locals. Later the police rescued him and admitted him to Kushtia General Hospital.
It is known that five female students were smoking on the roof of Sultanpur Mahtabiya Secondary School in the upazila. After learning about the matter, assistant teachers Moshiur Rahman Laltu and Oliur Rahman and Nanny Shiuli Khatun captured the scene of five female students smoking cigarettes on the roof of the school. Later, they were called to the teacher's room and detained for two hours, beaten and threatened to spread the video. At that time, the teachers took away the bag threatening to inform the TC and the parents. Unable to bear the humiliation, Zinya committed suicide by hanging herself.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday afternoon, the relatives and local people formed a human chain at Sultanpur's Beltla market with the body. Speakers in the human chain complained that the incident happened due to irresponsible behavior of the teachers, they should be punished.
Gaziur Rahman, the deceased's grandfather and a former member of Kaya UP, said that Jinia and some of her classmates were smoking on the roof of the school on Monday when they saw the students and office staff and informed the teachers. Later the teachers came and videotaped them and threatened to report the matter to the parents. In this incident Jinia tried to commit suicide by jumping into the Padma river after leaving the school and was rescued by the local people. Later around 5 pm she committed suicide by twisting the veil around her neck with the cover of the residence.
Zahid Hossain, the uncle of the victim in the human chain, said that the two teachers including Nanny blackmailed the students. They forced my niece to commit suicide. I will file a case in this case.
Abdur Rashid, head teacher of the school, said that he was at the upazila education office at the time of the incident on Monday. You can find out at night. On Tuesday morning, he went to the school and formed a committee to investigate the matter. He said that he could not go to see the body due to his busy schedule. I was attacked on Tuesday afternoon when I went to participate in the Janaza prayers.
Upazila Secondary Education Officer Kazi Ejaz Kaiser said that the school was visited on Tuesday in this incident. Talking to everyone I found out – not the video, the teachers recorded the students. The death of a student due to any incident is unfortunate, it is never desirable. But beating the headmaster is despicable.
Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Akibul Islam said that if a complaint is received, action will be taken after investigation. The headmaster was beaten up on the instigation of a party. However, he said that the situation is normal now.
