Mojibur Rahman Sumon started business by opening a grocery store in the urge of livelihood. Although initially profitable, he was forced to leave the shop due to a downturn in business. To turn around, he took the initiative to grow ginger in plastic bags after watching YouTube. After receiving training from the agriculture office, this entrepreneur started ginger cultivation at home on fallow land. He is expecting profit now that the yield is good.

Mojibur Rahman Sumon's house is in East Somnia Para village of Ghazirvita Union, Haluaghach, Mymensingh. Last year, he received training on ginger cultivation in plastic bags from the agriculture office through Lutfar Rahman, deputy assistant agriculture officer of the upazila agriculture office. Later, he started cultivating ginger in bags on the 10 decimal land under the shade of his house.

Sumon purchased 850 plastic bags in March this year for ginger cultivation in plastic bags. After that quantity of soil, chemical and organic fertilizers are mixed and bagged for ginger cultivation. Later sprouted ginger is put in the bag. Each bag costs Tk. 50.

After investigation, it has been found that plastic bags have been placed in rows on the land for ginger cultivation next to Suman's house. With advice from the Agriculture Office and proper care, ginger plants are growing rapidly in bags. By the end of next January, we will be able to extract 3 to 4 kg of ginger from each bag. Entrepreneur Suman said that 500 to 700 taka will be gained from each bag.

Meanwhile, many people are rushing to Suman's house to see the ginger land as ginger is grown in plastic bags outside of conventional ginger cultivation. Many farmers are also showing interest in this method of ginger cultivation.

Hasem Ali, a local farmer, said that no one has done ginger cultivation in plastic bags in our region before. Growing ginger in bags is easy and profitable. In view of Suman, we are also taking the initiative of ginger cultivation in fallow land.

Mujibur Rahman Sumon said, I used to spend the day sitting at home after leaving the dull grocery store business. One day I saw ginger cultivation in plastic bags on YouTube and got interested in myself. Later, when I contacted Assistant Agriculture Officer Lutfar Rahman for ginger cultivation in bags, he arranged for training. Training started ginger cultivation in the bag itself. Hope to get good yield.

Suman's father Mofizul Islam said that after leaving the grocery store, Suman will grow ginger one day by showing a video of ginger cultivation in a plastic bag on YouTube. Although I was not interested in the beginning, later I gave money due to my son's strong interest. The result of his labor and care have grown. Hope to get good yield.

Assistant Agriculture Officer Lutfar Rahman said, ginger can be grown in cement or flour sacks. This method reduces the risk of soil borne diseases in ginger cultivation. On the other hand, if the weather is hostile, the bag can be removed without any risk of damage. Besides, ginger cultivation in bags does not require separate land and maintenance. Many people in this region do not know about this method of ginger cultivation.
