296 people have been punished by the EC for violating the code of conduct

The Election Investigation Committee has summoned 296 people from different parties including Awami League for violating the code of conduct in the 12th Jatiya Sangsad Election.

This information was reported from the Election Commission (EC) law branch on Thursday (December 28).

According to EC sources, for the first time in this year's election, the commission has formed an election investigation committee with joint district and session judges, senior assistant judges and assistant judges for each of the 300 seats. These committees have issued 296 summons notices so far.

EC officials said that the highest number of cases were reported in Dhaka region, 86. Apart from this, 16 summons were issued in Rangpur region, 41 in Cumilla region, 17 in Faridpur, 20 in Chattogram, 14 in Sylhet, 22 in Barishal, 17 in Khulna, 34 in Rajshahi and 32 in Mymensingh.

Besides, based on the recommendation of the investigation committee, the EC has fined Tk. one lakh to Cumilla-6 Constituency MP and AL candidate AKM Bahauddin Bahar and Barguna-1 AL candidate Dhirendranath Shambhu to Tk. 50,000.

As per the schedule announced by the EC, the campaigning is now underway after the symbols of the candidates participating in the election have been released which will end on January 5. Voting will be conducted through transparent ballot boxes from 8 am to 4 pm on January 7.
