Bangabandhu's grassroots cooperative movement should be spread across the country, said Minister of Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives Md. Tajul Islam.

He spoke as the chief guest at a view exchange meeting organized at Agargaon Cooperative Building in the capital on Monday (January 22) around 11:00 am.

Tajul Islam said, the possibility of cooperatives was created at the hands of Bangabandhu. Harnessing the power of cooperatives will create endless possibilities for the poor.

He said, Bangabandhu wanted to develop people economically through cooperatives. That is why he gave importance to the mass-oriented cooperative movement. So that people get a better life. The extent to which Bangabandhu wanted to change society through cooperatives was not possible in his three and a half years. But the possibility of co-operatives was created by the hands of Bangabandhu. Harnessing the power of cooperatives will create endless possibilities for the poor. Bangabandhu's mass-oriented cooperative movement should be spread across the country to build a developed country.

Emphasizing the importance of modernizing cooperative laws and rules, he said that since cooperatives are financial institutions, any mismanagement in them will push the institution to ruin. In order to strengthen the co-operatives, it is necessary to make and enforce the modern laws.

Giving more importance to the aspect of training, the minister said, he said that we have to plan for public welfare and work to implement it.

The minister said that emphasis should be given on digitalization of registration of cooperative societies and annual audit of those societies. Cooperatives need to have transparency and accountability to run well. A clear idea should be created in the minds of the people so that people are associated with cooperatives and their economic development is created.

At this time, he discussed about various problems, possibilities and actions of the department.

Various practical aspects including modernizing the Cooperative Act through amendment, strengthening audit activities, strengthening National Cooperative Societies and increasing project based activities were highlighted in the meeting.

Mosammat Hamida Begum, Senior Secretary of Rural Development and Cooperative Division, was present as a special guest on the occasion. The officers of the department also participated in the meeting.
