231 local government elections including 2 city corporations today

Elections of 231 local government institutions including Cumilla, Mymensingh City Corporation and 6 Pourashavas are going to be held.

The polling will be held continuously from 8 am to 4 pm on Saturday (March 9).

According to the sources of the Election Commission, all the preparations for the polls have already been completed. Although the election schedule of 233 institutions has been announced, elections are not taking place in two. Voting in City Corporation, Pourashava and District Council elections will be done in EVMs.

According to Election Commission sources, Mymensingh City Corporation general election and Cumilla City Corporation mayoral by-election and general election of 3 Pourashavas (Patuakhali, Bakshiganj of Jamalpur District and Amtali of Barguna District) of 3 Municipalities (Trishal Municipality of Mymensingh District, Munshiganj Municipality) and Bogura District’s Shibganj Pourashava By-election for the vacant post of Mayor will be held. Also, a total of 231 elections will be held on March 9 with various by-elections in the local government.

16 forces of law and order are deployed in general centers and 17 forces in risky centers to ensure security of polling center in 2 city elections.

Meanwhile, the EC has deployed a force of 12 to 14 people in pourashavas and 22 people in UP elections.

Election Commissioner Md. Alamgir said about the election, the situation is normal. However, if a center goes out of control, the polling of that center will be stopped.

Mymensingh City Vote: Total voters in Mymensingh City Corporation are 3 lakh 36 thousand 496 people. Among them, 1 lakh 63 thousand 872 male voters, 1 lakh 72 thousand 615 female voters and 9 transgenders. The city has 33 general wards, 11 reserved wards. 128 polling stations and 990 polling booths have been set up.

There is only one party candidate among the candidates for the mayoral post. Joint General Secretary of Jatiya Party Shahidul Islam Swapan Mondol is contesting on plough symbol. According to the decision of the party, the ruling Awami League has kept the candidacy open without nominating anyone. Current mayor Ikramul Haque is in the fight with Table Clock in the city, district Awami League president Ehteshamul Alam is contesting with Horse symbol, adviser of district Awami League Sadekul Haque Khan Milki with Elephant symbol and former member of Krishak League Rezaul Haque Reza is contesting with Deer symbol.

In Mymensingh City, 149 people are contesting in 33 general wards and 69 people are contesting for the post of commissioner in 11 reserved wards.

Cumilla City By-election: On 13 December 2023 Cumilla City Corporation Mayor Arfanul Haque Rifat died while undergoing treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. Then on December 18, the post of Mayor was declared vacant. Later, on January 22, the election commission announced the schedule of by-elections for the post of mayor.

The total number of voters in the by-election for the post of mayor in Cumilla City Corporation is 2 lakh 42 thousand 458. Among them, 1 lakh 18 thousand 182 male voters, 1 lakh 24 thousand 274 female voters and 2 transgenders. 105 polling stations and 640 polling booths.

4 people are contesting for the post of Mayor in the city corporation by-election in Cumilla. Expelled 2 leaders from BNP former Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku (Clock symbol) and former leader of Swachhasevak Dal Nizamuddin Kaiser (Horse symbol) are contesting. And Awami League Metropolitan Organizing Secretary Tahsin Bahar (Bus) and Metropolitan Awami League Advisor Noor-Ur Tanim (Elephant symbol) are contesting.
