Police have arrested an extortionist on the charge of demanding the price of 6 bitcoins by threatening to kill the Awami League leader on social media WhatsApp.
Earlier, on March 26, the threat sent a demand message of 6 bit coins or Tk. 4.5 if he wanted to live, claiming to have received the order to kill him. He even threatened that there would be problems even if he took the help of law and order forces. The victim Awami League leader filed a case in Wari police station. The police arrested the threat after investigating the case.
Name of the arrested is Md. Jahangir Alam (29), crypto currency trader by profession. He was arrested in a raid in Rampura area of the capital on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, the mobile phone, WhatsApp number and laptop used in the threat were recovered.
Wari Division Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Iqbal Hossain confirmed the matter in the evening.
He said, the president of Dhaka Metropolitan South Awami League, Abu Ahmed Mannafi, a brave freedom fighter, was threatened by a WhatsApp number named Dark Mossad and said, Mr. Mannafi, I want to give you a message today, and this is the last message of your life. Although there was a plan to send you the message a few days ago, it did not work out.
The message says, someone has ordered me to kill you forever, though he has been silent for some time. We are a professional killer team, we work for money. You are our target; we have made many big plans to finish you which no one can stop. We know that after receiving this message, you will go to the law; it will not be of any use. The reason we are giving you this message is that if you give us double the money that we will give to finish you, then we will not do anything to you, but whoever did this against you, after you send the money, we will appear to you with audio and video evidence. You can use us quietly if you want. And if you think anything else, you will take over security, take legal help that will be the biggest mistake of your life, we will stick with it until we succeed, whatever time it takes. You have no other option but to do it. You will never be given a second knock. You buy and send us 6 bitcoins, and can buy with any IT support. The arrested Jahangir Alam (29) claimed to be a student of CSC department of Royal University. He is involved in trading bitcoins illegally.
DC Wari said Jahangir sent the same message to several others threatening to kill them. The value of each bitcoin is 66 thousand 363 dollars or Tk. 72 lakh 48 thousand. Accordingly, the price of 6 bitcoins is about Tk. 4 crore 35 lakhs. 6 people including president of Savar Upazila Chhatra League and PS of Finance Ministry received the same death threat. However, the arrested Jahangir could not collect money from anyone.
