Need to legislate on AI: Law Minister

Law Minister Anisul Haque commented that there is a need to legislate on the advantages and disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence.

He said, AI (Artificial Intelligence) Act is very important for creating a smart generation. Keeping in mind its pros and cons, we need to make laws.

He said these things at a stakeholder meeting on the draft of the Artificial Intelligence Act, 2024 at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) building in Agargaon on Thursday (April 4).

The Law Minister said that the Prime Minister wants to create a smart Bangladesh by 2041 and there will be a smart generation. AI law is crucial for creating a smart generation. Whenever we make any law, the Prime Minister has a policy of talking to the stakeholders and taking their views. We try to make the law with their opinion. We have proposed and framed the name of the Act.

All Ministries, Divisions, Organizations and concerned stakeholders participated in the meeting organized by Information and Communication Technology Division.

State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak presided over the meeting. Chairman of BTRC Engineer Mohiuddin Ahmed and other officials were present in it.

State Minister Palak said, we have prepared an outline to deal with the risks and exploit the potential of artificial intelligence.

Giving an example of the risk of AI, Palak said that the Sheikh Hasina Software Technology Park in Jashore was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on December 12, 2017. Recently, fake photos using artificial intelligence have been circulated on social media. Thus many crimes are being committed in the cyber world using voice and images.
