Thousands of homes gutted in Rohingya camp fire, 2 killed

Two people have died in a horrific fire at the Ukhia Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar. At least a thousand homes have been gutted in the fire.

The fire broke out at around 12:30 pm on Tuesday (December 24) near the CIC office of Kutupalong Lambashia Camp-1 West, C-5 Block, Ukhia.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhia Police Station Md. Arif Hossain told Barta24.com that a child and an elderly person died in the fire at the Ukhia Rohingya camp. However, their identities could not be known immediately.

Cox's Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Deputy Director Md. Tanharul Islam said that four units tried for about two hours to bring the fire under control. Members of the army and the Armed Police Battalion, which is engaged in maintaining law and order in the camp, worked with the fire service to control the fire.

The Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission has not yet provided information on the extent of casualties and damage.
